WelcomeThe Friends of Coombe Brook Valley is a group of local people who began meeting in 2015. We aim to help preserve the nature reserve by supporting its habitat for both people and wildlife to enjoy. We also aim to regularly work on the site in order to deal with the fly tipping and litter problems, and hopefully raise awareness in the area to prevent this in future. History |
The Coombe Brook Valley (locally known as The Gossie) is a 2 hectare site located on the edge of Fishponds and Speedwell, Bristol. The site is not yet formally designated as a nature reserve, but currently as a Site of Nature Conservation Interest (SNCI). It is owned by Bristol City Council, and partly managed by BCC and the Avon Wildlife Trust (for their website click here).
Despite needing some TLC after years of neglect, the site is a haven for birds, mammals and insects. Foxes, badgers and rabbits have all been witnessed in the locality. Woodpeckers are heard heard tapping away. Several people have even spotted one or more green parakeets living in the valley! It is comprised of wooded areas alongside a stream; mainly hazel, oak and sycamore. Further uphill there is a grassland meadow area which is in need of some restoration. Coombe Brook Valley even made it onto Countryfile magazine's list of Britains best 18 urban wildlife havens, described as a 'hidden gem'. Click here for the Countryfile article! |
